Hurricane Dennis Hits Florida July 9th - 10th, 2005

Hurricane Dennis, a strong Category 4 storm at its peak, made landfall near Pensacola, Florida, as a Category 3 storm. Users of AccuWeather's RadarPlus service tracked the storm before it came onshore, as it made landfall, and as its remnants moved northward.

Florida Satellite, Pressure, Winds 10:00 AM ET 7/9 - This beautiful shot of Dennis passing by the Florida Keys shows an Infrared Satellite behind a pressure analysis gradient and wind analysis arrows.   Florida Satellite, Winds, Radar 10:35 AM ET 7/9 - Radar on top of visible satellite, with wind analysis arrows, shows the eye of Dennis as it moves into the Gulf.

Florida Satellite, Pressure, Winds 1:00 PM ET 7/9 - Dennis intensifies as it moves farther into the Gulf of Mexico (Infrared Satellite behind a pressure analysis gradient and wind analysis arrows).   Florida Pressure, Winds 4:00 ET PM 7/9 -

Dennis continues to intensify as it moves northward Saturday evening. This simple but colorful high-resolution image details wind and pressure readings over the Gulf and Florida.

Florida Pressure, Radar, Satellite 5:00 PM ET 7/9 - In this shot, we have turned off the wind arrows and added the radar on top of the pressure gradient, over an Infrared satellite, clearly showing the eye of Dennis over the Gulf.   South Florida Saturday Rainfall Totals - (LOW-RES | HI-RES) - Here we see that over 10 inches of rain fell over the Gulf from Hurricane Dennis, according to Doppler-Estimated precipitation from the Key West radar.

South Florida Saturday Rainfall Totals - (LOW-RES | HI-RES) - Moving over to the Miami Doppler Radar precip estimates, we see that areas of southern Florida have also received over 10 inches of rain from the storm.   Miami Area Saturday Rainfall Totals - (HI-RES) - Zooming in on the Miami Doppler Radar precip estimates, we can see several areas of over 10 inches of rain in western Broward and eastern Collier County.

Florida Satellite, Winds, Radar 8:00 AM ET 7/10 - Dennis makes landfall just east of Pensacola, Florida. Radar on top of visible satellite, with wind analysis arrows, shows the eye of Dennis as it moves on shore. Notice the interesting lack of rainfall in the southern part of the storm, which would lead residents to believe they never got out of the eye!   Southeast Satellite, Pressure, Winds, and Radar 1:00 PM ET 7/10 - This beautiful shot of Dennis approaching the Florida coastline shows an Infrared Satellite behind a pressure analysis gradient and wind analysis arrows, with radar on top.

Pensacola Radar, Lightning Strikes 1:56 PM ET 7/10 - (LOW-RES | HI-RES) As Dennis approaches Pensacola, this radar image from RadarPlus shows unusual lightning strikes in the eyewall (white strikes are 0-40 minutes old). Hurricanes do not typically contain lightning when offshore. Surface plots from land stations are also shown in this image.   Escambia/Santa Rosa County Radar, Lightning Strikes 2:28 PM ET 7/10 - (HI-RES) The eyewall of Hurricane Dennis is now moments away from landfall. Additional lightning strikes are still occurring within the eyewall. Hurricane Andrew in 1991 had no more than 10 lightning strikes per hour, and some hours with no lightning, during its approach to Florida.

Florida Pressure, Winds, Radar 3:00 PM ET 7/10 - Dennis makes landfall just east of Pensacola, Florida. Radar on top of visible satellite, with wind analysis arrows, shows the eye of Dennis as it moves on shore. Again, notice the unusual lack of rainfall south of the storm, which would keep many areas from a flooding disaster.   Southeast Radar, Satellite, Winds, Pressure 3:00 PM ET 7/10 - (LOW-RES | HI-RES) Hurricane Dennis makes landfall east of Pensacola, Florida Sunday afternoon. During Dennis, RadarPlus users could toggle any or all weather and geographical layers while zooming and panning maps of the Southeast or Florida.

Florida Pressure, Winds 2:00 ET PM 7/10 - (HI-RES)As Dennis prepares to make landfall Sunday afternoon, RadarPlus shows a high resolution pressure and wind analysis in the Florida Panhandle. Sustained wind reports are plotted on the map, and Interstates and county borders are shown.   Escambia/Santa Rosa County Radar 2:28 PM ET 7/10 - (HI-RES)This closeup zoom of the Eglin AFB Radar Composite Reflectivity in RadarPlus shows the eyewall of Hurricane Dennis over the streets and county roads in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties at 3:02 PM ET.

Southeast Radar, Satellite, Winds, Pressure 3:00 PM ET 7/10 - (HI-RES)Radar on top of a pressure gradient and Infrared satellite (with wind arrows) shows an impressive Hurricane Dennis moving inland over the Florida Panhandle. As pointed out above, the lack of rain on the southern part of the storm mystifies residents.
